12 Tips For An Eclectic Interior

You often hear the term eclectic interior , but what exactly is it? Is an eclectic interior a style where you just do something? A casual style? Or is it really thought through? An Eclectic interior is a mix of all kinds of design periods, multiple interior styles and different materials and textures. But what is more important is that the style is based on you as a person and your taste, furniture that you like and elements that you adore. Do you dare to bend the rules? Break traditions, and do you have guts? Then an Eclectic interior is suitable for you. We give 12 useful and fun tips!

1. New Year’s Eve

Mixing old and new stuff is a must in an Eclectic style. For example, mix an old cupboard with new chairs, a vintage mirror with a new sofa or a sleek and modern sofa with a retro dresser. With this you create an interior that is equipped with modern conveniences, but also exudes a lot of character and personality.

2. Anything and everything

How do you describe an interior where the seats are all different? The table is not the same as a coffee table? Everything has a different color? I call it anything and everything. Because that is what you often see in an eclectic style. Various styles are mixed together, various colors, various shapes and yet it all comes together. Mix with various chairs, lamps or all kinds of crockery.

3. The basics

The right basis for an eclectic interior can be a simple and neutral basis of walls, floors and ceilings. A white canvas, which you can fill in as desired with the most beautiful furniture and accessories from different design periods, different styles, colors and materials. However, this does not mean that colored walls are forbidden in an eclectic interior. Just be careful, otherwise it can get too busy and chaotic.

4. Prints and patterns

A large part of an eclectic style are the various prints and patterns that are combined with each other. Have this reflected in nice accessories such as a beautiful vintage rug, cheerful pillows and nice blankets. In the bedroom you can think of a stylish duvet cover or a bedspread. You can decorate the walls with beautiful wall art. And if you want to create a certain atmosphere, it can also be a good idea to opt for wallpaper with a certain pattern or pattern.

5. Personal collections

As mentioned above, an eclectic interior is the nicest if it is really personal. You can give your interior a personal touch by giving beautiful collections a place. You can think of souvenirs that you have taken with you during all your wonderful journeys, objects that you have collected for your hobby such as plates, books or magazines, photos on cupboards and as a collage on the wall … And if you have children, it is of course fantastic to give the fun drawings, coloring pages and craftwork of your children a place in your interior!

6. Create the unexpected

In an eclectic interior you look your eyes out. Original details, beautiful furniture and accessories, but also because you did not expect anything at all. These can be different things. Think for example the ceiling in the living room that you have tiled, or a chair in a beautiful eye-catching color. Elements that ensure that your interior is remembered!

7. Art at home

Art should definitely not be missing in the home, and even more so in an eclectic interior. You can of course come in many shapes and sizes. What kind of art you want to take home depends very much on you. Take something that you like and that suits you. This can be a large painting above a couch, a striking object that you place in the living room or a colorful tapestry.

8. Vintage leather

Vintage leather is super popular. It not only looks very beautiful, it also fits in all interior styles. And that makes vintage leather a very good idea in an eclectic interior. Let it come back in a vintage leather sofa, a Moroccan ottoman, a leather headboard in the bedroom or a vintage leather lounge chair. You won’t regret it, promised!

9. Velvet

A type of material that you often encounter in eclectic interiors is velvet. Velvet has been used in the world of interior & design for a long time, so it is impossible to imagine life without it. You have beautiful velvet furniture, such as velvet sofas, armchairs and beds, but you can also think of smaller velvet decoration accessories. Velvet cushions, velvet curtains, velvet poufs, you name it. The choice is huge.

10. Tidy is neat

An eclectic interior is therefore characterized by a mix of anything and everything. The pitfall is that it gets messy, and of course nobody wants that. Whatever you combine with what, make sure it stays tidy. That is why storage options are very important. Create enough cupboard space in the living room and kitchen, but also in the bedroom, hall and bathroom. These can be closed cupboards, but open cupboards can also be a good idea. Ideal for exhibiting your collections.

11. Create a focal point

A focal point is very important, especially in a relatively busy eclectic interior. Even with a variety of styles and periods, there must still be a center in the room. What is the first thing you notice when you enter your room? Is it the brick wall , fireplace or bold work of art? If you can’t find anything that stands out, keep looking for it. Your room is not complete without that striking piece that your guests will all be talking about.

12. Create coherence

Coherence is an important key for a nice eclectic interior. Look for ways to unite a room through a color scheme or materials that you let come back in multiple places. Do you like golden accents? Have that come back more often, for example in the form of a golden wall lamp, golden door handles, golden candle holders, you name it. This will also make it less chaotic.
